Be Holy

Leviticus 11:44: “I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.”

In this particular part of scripture God is giving Israel instructions regarding clean and unclean food. However, that is not all that’s behind this verse. God is also setting standards for his people to help them avoid the ungodly culture of the people they were going to be around. This verse should be applied to Christians today.

Christians today must separate themselves from the corrupt society that surrounds them. We are called to be aliens to this world. 2 Peter 2:11 says:

“Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.”

And Leviticus 10:10 says:

“You must distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean”

Christians need to drink, eat, dress, talk, and act in ways that honor God. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit of God cannot dwell in a vessel that is controlled by sin. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says:

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”

Christians you are called to be holy in everything you do. Honor God in all aspects of your life. When you dishonor God, what are you doing? Sinning. Sin dishonors God. We must live in purity. That includes our actions and our thoughts. It is not a sin to be tempted, but it is a sin when you begin to entertain that thought or temptation. Sin is death.

So really we are left with two choices: Life and Death. Deuteronomy 30:19 says:

“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live”

Life is found in Jesus Christ. Death is found in sin and the ways of the world. It’s as simple as that. Your choice. No one else can make it for you. God’s not going to force you to choose life, but he wants you to. Choose life today.
