A Higher Standard

God holds us to an even higher standard, than the Old Testament Israelites were obligated to follow. Matthew 5:27-30 says:

““You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.”

Jesus is not only condemning the act of adultery here, he is also condemning the lustful fantasies we all catch our selves doing at times. He’s not talking about the thought that just passes through our mind. It isn’t a sin to be tempted, unless you deliberately put yourself in that situation. You sin when you dwell on that lustful thought and start desiring the wrong act. It will all go down hill from there.

That’s why Christians must be careful in everything they do! Especially be careful of what movies you watch, what music you listen to, and even what you read. Sexually explicit reading material can raise just as much temptation and trouble as an image. Guard your hearts. Once sin gets ahold of you (especially lust) it is very hard to break free. You’re flesh will want to rise up and try to take control. Put it to death! Colossians 3:5 says:

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.”

Christians also must be people of modesty. Men and women both should be modest in their words, actions, and clothing. If you wear something that encourages someone else to lust, it is just as wrong as the person who is lusting after you. You don’t want to lead anyone into sin. I know that’s the last thing I want to do! Mark 9:42 says:

“And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck.”

Now Jesus says, “If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.” I don’t think he actually wants you to gouge out your eye or cut off your hand. However, if you have something that causes you to sin, get rid of it. That may be television, internet, a book, or music. It really could be a lot of things. You must wage war against sin!

Christians are held to a high standard. God didn’t make these rules because he didn’t want us to have fun. They are for our own good. Through Christ you are made righteous. His blood takes away our sin. Make war against sin. Resist sin. Trust God. Only through Him can you live a righteous life.

In Christ,
