Not of This World- A Christian’s Relationship to the World

1 John 2:15-16: Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.

The word for world used here is used throughout the New Testament (kosmos). This word refers to “a world system that is going its own way apart from God.”

Satan uses things of the world to corrupt a person’s heart. He uses music a lot to corrupt someone. In fact, Satan probably exerts most of his influence through music. Before he got kicked out of Heaven, he was in charge of the music in Heaven. This is why, personally, I have made the decision to only listen to Christian music. You can find all types of from all genres. Rap, Pop, Rock, and Gospel-you name it you can find it! Satan also uses things such as television, internet, money, fame, and power. You really do have to be careful in everything.

The world and true Christians are two completely different groups of people.

Christians are God’s alone. That is where their lives are put. That’s our hope. We belong to God alone. The world, however, is under the control of sin and ultimately Satan. This is why Christians must separate from the filth and corruption of the world.

Christians are to be aliens to this world. We are only here for a short time. Our home is in Heaven. This world should be foreign to us. In fact we are called out of this world. John 15:19 says:

“If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.”

Through a relationship with Christ, Christians can overcome this world. If you love this world it is a type of unfaithfulness to God. If you love this world, you’ll be wrapped up in its beliefs and behaviors. Ultimately, love for this world could lead to apostasy (see last blog: Apostasy-Abandoning Your Faith).

This world is temporary and will be destroyed by God (2 Peter 3:10). If you get caught up in this world, you will be destroyed as well unless you turn to Christ for salvation. A Christian’s loyalty isn’t on earth. It is in Heaven with God. In this world Christian’s will experience trouble, but through Christ you can overcome.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”- John 16:33

God bless!

  1. It’s great to see someone your age blogging for Christ! Keep spreading the love of God! Revival is coming. Good post. Stay strong and in His grace. Blessings!

  2. Great post. I love Peter’s addressal to Christians in his day: “strangers” or “pilgrims” in this world. We are tourists!
